tomb-stained butterfly
My mystery butterfly, I found out, is called a Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis Antiopa). In England, this butterfly used to be called Grand Surprise or Petticoat. Interesting name, Mourning Cloak, which translates from the Swedish, from the name Swedish settlers to America gave this butterfly. May Swenson (b. 1913), whose parents were Swedish immigrants to Utah, wrote a poem shaped like a butterfly in honor of this beauty: Unconscious Came a Beauty. (click on her name to find the poem)
