Canadian anglers

Our local paper has a Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down section, where anyone can send in something either uplifting or troubling for everyone to think about. So, after my morning walk I sent in this:

Thumbs down to the angler who dumped his/her entire catch of smelts into McVicar's Creek. If not criminal, this act is certainly obscene. Dumping your catch of smelts is a complete disregard of the gift of life that fish give us. The dead smelts, a couple of hundred, are lying on the bottom of the creek, just down from Court St. I thought Canadians respect nature. Well, this morning I felt sick to my stomach to see those dead smelts wasted like that. Fishing is not entertainment. Next time stay home and watch tv instead of killing senselessly.

How cruel! I can't understand such behaviour... Hugs, M.

What is so infuriating is these people do it when nobody is watching! Cowards!

yes, whoever did this is despicable. What a waste of food and life. I have been reading Evo Morales' call for legal recognition of Mother Earth's rights and all of the creatures, too. Why shouldn't fish have rights, too, just because we think we're so smart and they're so dumb?

Is it sure that it's a crime of anglers. Can't it be matter of some chemical(toxic) waste or something like that.

Ari, no this is not some toxic or chemical kill off. This was a dumping of smelts as it is clear that it is an isolated act, and the rest of the river runs clear. These smelts were just thrown away. And what makes it worse is that the old Finnish guys at coffee the other day told me that this year it is really hard to get a bucketful of smelts. One man said he went 3 times and no luck. And look at this waste here.
