kahvipannu

vintage Finnish copper kahvipannu(coffeepot)

Try some Finnish today! Here is the pronunciation of kahvipannu

Which Finnish Canadian household does not have a model of this copper kahvipannu hanging around as a decoration somewhere? The "old way" of making coffee on the stovetop is still the way I make it everyday! I never use a coffee maker unless I have a huge crowd over. It's never hot enough. And besides, who needs to make such a large pot? I never throw coffee down the drain. How to make "old style" coffee? Just boil the water in a pot on the stove, take it off the element, add your coffee grounds, put it back just for a sec than put it on the side, preferably covered with what in our house is called a myssy. I use cream in my coffee, too. I will make a great old Finnish lady one day....although...while I make coffee every morning using the tried-and-true Finnish stovetop way, I use fairtrade organic coffee beans that I grind fresh (Kultamokka available here is not fairtrade) and my kahvipannu is actually a small Arabic coffee pot...hmmm. What kind of Finlander am I, anyway?

You are sure a weird one! Ha,ha,ha. I'll have to try making it in a kahvipannu. I'll follow your recipe. Hugs, M.

Yes, I have one of those pots as decoration, inherited from my parents! I remember the Finnish coffee we had on our first visit back to the 'old country' in my teens. It was boiled in a kettle, not just steeped for a minute - horrible! :-)

After long use of automatic drip coffeemakers, we've graduated to a French press, which sounds like the coffee you make.. and it's good.

Oh, forgot to say - the first link is broken.

I've always wondered if it's safe to use copper. Maybe it's got a liner, I should check for I vaguely recall that they had to be relined from time to time in the olden days.

I am a weird one, yes.

Thanks for letting me know about the link. I went back and fixed it, but the page that yesterday it opened to when I clicked on the image of the kahvipannu seems to be in an error state today! weird.

Copper does take more care, and I think because of that, most people stay away from them today. Also, there are some things one should not cook in copper pots or pans, just like aluminum (which I threw out years ago).

I have a French press for tea; maybe I will try it for coffee one day. I don't know, maybe it's the aesthetics of making coffee that is part of the process. I stopped using the French press for the tea long ago (too clunky to clean in my opinion) so I just use the old fashioned tea kettle on top of the stove and a strainer when I pour tea or coffee. More coffee stories to follow!
